City of Kawartha Lakes Municipal Archives

The Municipal Archives of the City of Kawartha Lakes is the official repository for the City and its predecessor municipalities, townships, villages, and the former County of Victoria. Located at 31 Mary Street East in Lindsay, the Archives is responsible for the conservation and preservation of both the municipal government records and privately donated collections—ranging from photographs, letters, diaries, journals, maps, plans, by-laws, minutes, tax and assessment rolls, land deeds, and school registers—that together capture the region’s history.

Under the direction of the City’s Manager of Corporate Records and Archival Services / Municipal Archivist, the holdings are cared for in Kawartha’s only climate-controlled vault, ensuring their long-term protection and accessibility. The Archives welcomes researchers for both drop-in and scheduled visits at no cost, with fees applying only to reproductions and in-depth remote research.

Beyond municipal records, the Archives also accepts donations from individuals, families, businesses, and organizations whose materials help document the broader story of the community. In this way, the City of Kawartha Lakes continues the legacy of its predecessor communities and preserves the diverse historical record of the region.

The Archives is also active in public engagement, offering free workshops on caring for personal and family collections, providing guidance to local groups and institutions, and collaborating on heritage initiatives throughout Kawartha Lakes.

Corporate Records

The City of Kawartha Lakes Corporate Records program is responsible for managing, preserving, and disposing of the municipality’s official records in accordance with Sections 254 and 255 of the Municipal Act. This includes records of Council meetings and decisions, committees of Council, as well as local boards and agencies. The program operates under the authority of the City Clerk and is overseen by the Manager of Corporate Records and Archival Services.

Records of Mayor and Council, constituency records, such as those related to their interactions with constituents are separate from the municipality's official record-keeping system and the city does not manage those records as it is up to the individual councilor to maintain and present their records should they be needed for a Freedom of Information request.
