Privacy Protection

Protecting your personal information and privacy is very important to the City of Kawartha Lakes.

The City collects your personal information for many activities, services, and programs. Under MFIPPA, we cannot collect your personal information unless we are legally authorized to do so. With few exceptions, personal information may be collected directly from you and we must give you advance notice in writing of:

  • our authority to collect your information
  • why it's being collected and how it's going to be used
  • who to contact if you have questions about the collection of your personal information

The City cannot use your personal information except as permitted under MFIPPA. Without your permission, personal information can only be used for the purpose for which it was collected or a consistent purpose.

The City's Official Access, Information and Privacy Policy, and other policies relating to privacy can be found on our Council Policies page, and are reviewed each term of Council, or as directed by City Council.

Use of municiPal AI Search Feature

Your use of the municiPal AI search feature, referred to as “municiPal”, confirms your acknowledgement and agreement to the terms of this disclaimer and to your search log being collected for product enhancement purposes only. At no time will municiPal collect any personal information. If you do not agree to the below terms and conditions of this disclaimer, please do not use municiPal. Instead, use the Google Search feature, located to the right of municiPal on desktop and below the municiPal feature on mobile devices.

The municiPal AI search feature is a pilot project that is continually evolving and as a result, may undergo changes. Such changes may be influenced by search logs, generative artificial intelligence (AI) model updates, other Kawartha Lakes website updates, new data sources such as City of Kawartha Lakes Council Reports and Minutes, and other documents and platform updates by the host of this website (GHD Digital). As a result, the information provided by municiPal AI search feature may change.

The municiPal AI search feature is meant to be used for information purposes only. The information generated by municiPal is not to be mistaken with advice of any kind. The City of Kawartha Lakes disclaims any liability for direct, indirect, special, incidental, exemplary, economic, consequential or other damages that may arise from the use of the municiPal or information provided by the Virtual Assistant, including your reliance upon such information.

The City of Kawartha Lakes may modify or update the terms of this disclaimer at any time, without notice. Use of municiPal following any such modifications or updates will act as confirmation of your acceptance of the terms in this disclaimer.

ServiceHub - Collection of Personal Information

The City of Kawartha Lakes collects only as much personal information as it is necessary to assist you in conducting business with us, and in maintaining your custom dashboard on the ServiceHub. Collection is often done for the following purposes:

  • To process your requests for services, products or additional information;
  • To communicate with you regarding services that you have requested;
  • To advise you of changes to our website services and of service interruptions; and
  • To meet legal and regulatory requirements.

Personal information is disposed of in accordance with the City of Kawartha Lakes Records and Retention By-law that provides specific retention periods for varying types of information (i.e. a form for a service request). This By-law dictates the appropriate amount of time that information is retained by the City of Kawartha Lakes, and the proper means to dispose of said records and information.

Website Usage Information

Every computer connected to the internet is given a domain name and an Internet Protocol (IP) address, containing a unique set of numbers. This information reveals nothing personal about the visitor. When a visitor requests a page from within the City’s website, our web servers automatically recognize that computer’s IP address. Web server log files are generated when visitors view our webpages.

How we use your data

Our website analytics only use non-identifiable data. Some parts of our website may not be logged on our servers, but third party servers. This includes such areas like payments through our third party payment processors Moneris and Paypal or our public engagement site Jump In, Kawartha Lakes. The City of Kawartha Lakes uses server log data to:

  • Fix errors on our website;
  • Defend against malicious attacks; and
  • Generate website usage statistics.

Logging Practices

When you browse the City's website our servers automatically collect limited amounts of standard information for traffic monitoring and statistical purposes. This information does not identify a visitor personally and is only used to administer the site and identify usage trends to improve the website. Our web logs may store the domain name and IP address from which the City's website was accessed; the type of browser and operating system used; the date and time the site was access; the pages visited, and; the region of the world from which the site was accessed.

The City's website has links to other external websites for your information and convenience. The City of Kawartha Lakes is not responsible for the privacy practices of websites linked to from our site.

The Subscribe page allows you to sign up for news, events and newsletters from across departments. If you ever wish to unsubscribe, or change your preferences, you can do so by clicking on the last email you received from noreply@kawarthalakes.ca, and updating your preferences online. We do not sell or share your data. We use it only for the express purpose it was collected for.

Although we attempt to ensure that all information posted on our site is accurate and complete, we do not represent that it is so, or guarantee it, and accept no liability or obligation for accuracy or completeness. If there is any discrepancy between information posted on our website, staff can be contacted to help clarify the information. We take reasonable precautions to protect your personal information in our possession from loss, misuse and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration and destruction.
