Poverty Reduction Strategy

A joint Poverty Reduction Strategy is in place for Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County. The strategy has several components including:

Haliburton- Kawartha Lakes Community Roundtable for Poverty Reduction

Established in summer of 2016, the primary objective of the Roundtable is the implementation of the recommendations of the City of Kawartha Lakes and County of Haliburton Poverty Reduction Strategy Action Plans. The Roundtable shall also champion initiatives, programs and services that will reduce the prevalence of poverty or reduce the impact of poverty for all residents of the City of Kawartha Lakes and County of Haliburton.

Waste Management Strategy

In 2019, we spent the entire year gathering public feedback and information to help update our Integrated Waste Management Strategy, a strategic plan outlining goals and objectives to ensure we are doing the best we can to manage waste and recycling.

Did you know that since the first strategy was implemented, we have reduced the amount of garbage being picked up at the curb by 20%?

We have also donated over six tonnes of reusable materials to Habitat for Humanity and diverted 43% of waste from our landfills.
The new strategy places an emphasis on looking at ideas for more public education, textile recycling and diverting food waste within Kawartha Lakes.
