City of Kawartha Lakes Municipal Archives

Records and Archives

Do you ever wonder what happened to all the records of the former towns and townships or where the City of Kawartha Lakes stores its important records? If so, the answer is at the Records and Archives Centre at 31 Mary Street E. in Lindsay

What We Do

The Municipal  Archives is responsible for the care of both the municipal government records and privately donated collections. Archival documents that we have include: photographs, letters, diaries, journals, maps, plans, by-laws, minutes, tax and assessment rolls, land deeds, school registers, and many more. All of which help researcher who come to the Centre to research. The Archives welcomes researchers for both drop-in and scheduled visits at no cost, with fees applying only to reproductions and in-depth remote research

Who Does it

The Manager of Corporate Records and Archival Services is also the Municipal Archivist. The Municipal Archivist make sure that everything we hold at the Records and Archives Centre are cared for in Kawartha’s only climate-controlled vault, ensuring their long-term protection and accessibility.

What an Archives Does

Beyond municipal records, the Archives also accepts donations from individuals, families, businesses, and organizations whose materials help to tell the story of the both the City and the former municipalities. In this way, the City of Kawartha Lakes continues the legacy of its predecessor communities and preserves the diverse historical record of the region.

The Archives is active in public engagement, offering  workshops on caring for personal and family collections, providing guidance to local groups and institutions, and collaborating on heritage initiatives throughout the Kawartha Lakes.

Corporate Records

The City of Kawartha Lakes Corporate Records program is responsible for managing, preserving, and disposing of the municipality’s official records in accordance with Sections 254 and 255 of the Municipal Act, 2001. This includes records of Council meetings and decisions, committees of Council, as well as local boards and agencies. The program operates under the authority of the City Clerk and is overseen by the Manager of Corporate Records and Archival Services.

Records of Mayor and Council are not kept by the City. Constituency records, such as those related to their interactions with residents of their wards are separate from the municipality's official records and the city does not manage those records. It is up to the individual councilor to maintain and present their records should they be needed for a Freedom of Information request.
