Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness in Kawartha Lakes

Farming is in our roots. Kawartha Lakes' Agriculture, Food and Agri-business sector is thriving. With land well-suited for livestock and field crops, and a full component of feed, farm, input and equipment suppliers, our agriculture industry is set up for success.

As a regional centre for agri-business retail and support services, Kawartha Lakes has all the major farm equipment dealers, large commercial grain elevators, input suppliers, a livestock sale barn, and large animal veterinary services to support over 1,100 crop and livestock farming operations. We’re home to the largest community pasture in Ontario, two dairy processing businesses with national and international distribution. Kawartha Lakes is also home to several seed production and marketing businesses including the Canadian head office of a world-class seed production facility serving international markets.

Agriculture is part of life here. We’re committed to pursuing diverse and value added opportunities, ensuring our Agriculture, Food, and Agri-business sector continues as a major contributor to the economic growth of Kawartha Lakes.

"Doing business in Kawartha Lakes has a lot of advantages. We can work very closely with our number one supplier which is our farmers. Most of the milk that we bring in is within 100 kilometers of our plant here. We spend a lot of time with our farmers, understanding what it is that we can do to help build their business, but we also love working with them to make our great products."

- Brian Kerr, Kawartha Dairy Ltd.
