Beach Testing:
The Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Heath Unit conducts tests weekly at local beaches to test for E.coli levels in the water. Results are posted every Thursday and Friday on the health unit website. Warnings are also posted at local beaches or are available by calling 1-866-888-4577 extension 5006.
In 2020, the health unit moved to a three-colour system of reporting beach results
- Green: beach is open/safe for swimming.
- Yellow: warning, high counts of bacteria may be present in the water. Swimming is not advised, as it may lead to illness, but those who do should avoid dunking their heads or swallowing water.
- Red: beach is closed due to high levels of bacteria; unsafe for swimming.
Beaches and COVID-19:
The health unit encourages visitors to the beach to be aware of the potential for exposure to COVID-19. Helpful tips to keep in mind when visiting the beach include:
- Follow beach safety protocols and procedures as posted or instructed by staff
- Stay home if you or any member of your family is sick
- Visit a beach closer to home to reduce travel and the risk of spreading the virus elsewhere
- Bring hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes to use at the beach, especially if soap and water are unavailable
- Avoid swallowing, spitting or spouting water while swimming
For more information visit the Health Unit website.
