Landfill Diversion Programs

Several diversion programs are available at Kawartha Lakes landfill sites to help keep reusable and recyclable materials out of the landfill. Some programs are available at all five landfill sites, while others are only available at the Lindsay Ops and Fenelon landfills.


Electronics

All City landfill sites accept electronics for recycling at no charge. Examples of the types of electronics we accept include:

  • computers
  • printers
  • copiers
  • fax machines
  • small appliances
  • TVs, VCRs, CDs, DVDS
  • power tools
  • telephones
  • cell phones
  • electronic game consoles and games
  • digital cameras
  • hair dryers
  • smoke detectors
  • humidifiers

We are unable to accept the following for recycling:

  • vacuums
  • oscillating fans
  • dehumidifiers
  • VHS tapes

Please remove all personal information before you drop off electronics.


Household Hazardous Waste

You should never put household hazardous waste into your garbage or recycling. For the safety and health of our community, wildlife and environment it must be disposed of at household hazardous waste depots. There is no charge for this service (residents only).

New Hazardous Waste Drop Off Requirements

  • One pound (1lb) propane tanks: The valve end must be capped or securely taped before being brought to a depot
  • Lithium batteries, button/coin cells, and 12-volt batteries: Battery terminals must be covered with tape (packing, electrical, or duct), or the batteries must be individually sealed in a bag before being brought to a depot

  • Fenelon Landfill (341 Mark Road, Cameron)
  • Lindsay Ops Landfill (51 Wilson Road, Lindsay)

When you drop off household hazardous waste materials, they must be:

  • clearly labelled if it is not in it's original packaging
  • in its original packaging or container (or clearly labelled with the contents)
  • tightly contained, in a sealed container with no visible leaks
  • less than 15L each (liquids)

If you bring fuel to the landfill, you will need to leave your container behind. Fuel is never permitted to be dumped out of its container at the landfill.

We are unable to accept:

  • unknown substances
  • leaking or open containers
  • fireworks, flares, ammunition or explosives
  • industrial or commercial hazardous waste

The City is required to accept 55lbs (25kgs) of each category of household hazardous waste per customer per day. Please bring small loads of household hazardous waste to the depots. Quantities greater than this may not be accepted in one trip. It will be dependent on whether there adequate storage space available at that time.

Examples of household hazardous waste (HHW) include:

  • antifreeze
  • autobody filler
  • automotive batteries - lead acid
  • brake fluid
  • carburetor cleaner
  • car wax with solvent
  • chrome polish
  • engine degreaser
  • fuel additives
  • gasoline (in ULC approved container)
  • oil filters
  • starter fluids
  • transmission fluid
  • used motor oil
  • windshield washer fluid

All types of household batteries are accepted.

Note: Lithium-ion phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries are not accepted at Landfills and the manufacturer will need to be contacted.

  • hair dye, hair spray (full or empty aerosol cans), perm solution

  • moisturizer, lotions
  • make up, cosmetics, eye shadow, mascara
  • foundation, concealer
  • styling products, gel, serum, oil
  • soap, body wash

  • metal halide lamps
  • thermometers and thermostats
  • ultraviolet lamps
  • fluorescent tubes and bulbs

  • fungicides, herbicides and insecticides
  • chemical fertilizers
  • flea and tick pet products
  • rat poison
  • wood preservatives

Reuse Programs

Paint reuse

From May 1 to October 15 you can pick up paint to bring home or bring your leftover paint to the Fenelon or Lindsay Ops landfill household hazardous waste depots.

Lindsay Ops and Fenelon Habitat for Humanity Drop-Off

There is a bin at the Lindsay Ops landfill and a Reuse Building at the Fenelon Landfill to drop off reuse items for the local Habitat for Humanity Store.

Acceptable items include:

  • bulky Items (dressers, desks, chairs, cabinets, bed frames, mirrors, tables, outdoor furniture)
  • houseware and kitchenware (plates, pots and pans, glasses, mugs, utensils, teapots, paintings, pictures, serving bowls, decorative accessories, small mirrors)
  • construction and demolition materials (doors, windows, used wood in good condition, sinks, vanities, tiles in good condition)
  • outdoor equipment (skis, golf clubs, snowshoes, bicycles, rollerblades, ski or snowboard boots, shovels, seed spreaders, non-motorized grass mower)

Non-acceptable items include:

  • electronics
  • mattresses
  • clothing and footwear
  • infant items: (toys, safety devices, furniture)
